Why does a writer write? Because the words call to us. The stories won’t tell themselves. If there is one thing authors all have in common, it is their love of words. Words are our paint. Our clay. Our plants in our garden. Building our imaginary worlds with words makes us architects.
But have you ever thought about the beauty of the words themselves? Or am I just odd that way? 🙂 Words themselves can have personality. The term “onomatopoeia” is a good example of realizing that words often have a life and depth all their own.
What are your favorite words? The words that you love to say because they roll off your tongue or make you laugh? What about a word that holds a special memory?
One of the things that is so nice about language too is that there are many of them! You might have a favorite word in a different language. And that makes your vocabulary broader and your world richer. 🙂

I was going to say, the word “petrichor” sounds awfully familiar, as if I’d read it somewhere recently. Turns out it’s a Ludovico Einaudi song I’d listened to a couple days ago – a musician I think you and I have talked about before, if I remember correctly?
Back on topic: I love words, too. And though I don’t have a favorite word at the moment, I do try to look up words I read that aren’t familiar to me. In fact, I’ve got a journal where I write down those words, then look up and copy their definitions at a later date. 🙂

Yes, I love Ludovico Einaudi’s music! I don’t think I have heard of a song by him by that name. I will have to look it up!
I have a notebook similar to that! But mine is more for words or phrases I like that I have read or come up with to use in my stories.
I like to call it “word collecting”. I should add a section for words I want to look up the meaning for. 🙂
