When writing any type of fiction, a map is a crucial item to have. Even a simple sketch for your own benefit is helpful. In an imaginary world, a map helps you and your readers keep your sites, place names and points of interest straight! It doesn’t have to be detailed or elaborate, it can be just enough to help your readers understand the lay of the land.

I have followed K.M. Weiland over at her site Helping Writers Become Authors for several years. She is an award-winning, self-published author. The advice she offers on her site is some of the best I have come across online and comes from her years of seasoned experience.
When I realized that she had written some books on how to write a story, I was thrilled with the idea of reading them! I decided to start with the second book in her series, Structuring Your Novel. I already love to outline like crazy, but I don’t always know how to get my story into a structured form with clearly defined scenes.

Some of my favorite books will forever be the Little House books. I remember the first time I read them being utterly taken with the amazing descriptions Laura Ingalls wrote of her pioneer life. And though they were written as fiction, the stories were true! I still love to take out my battered copies of the books every once in a while and peruse the well loved pages.

I thought that was a rather clever blog post title when I first wrote it up, but then I realized, aren’t these really all the same words for the same person?
Well, sort-of. I like to think of these three words as the path that a person who loves to write (Writer) takes to tell a story (Storyteller) and then, if they wish, publish their work (Author).
But yet, that isn’t quite right, either.
They are the all one in the same words and yet they are different.
(And this doesn’t even touch those amazing people out there that hold the title of bibliophile! Readers are a whole different world than writers 🙂 Or are they also one in the same? Hmmm. I should think about that one.)
Is there any season more welcome after the heat of summer, than autumn?
